Microsoft's Windows Surface tablet

There must be red faces among marcomms types at Microsoft today after the tech world universally collectively guffawed at an embarrassing tweet whereby media mogul Oprah Winfrey proclaimed her love of Microsoft’s new Surface tablet from guess what? Yep, an iPad.

The tech world’s sudden sense of high esteem as it pivots from geek to chic is nothing short of breathtaking at the best of times. For example, PRs who used to specialise in tech press now say they specialise in ‘biz-tech press’, is one recent example, to convey their new sense of purpose. Pah! And let’s not forget the rent-a-crowd product launch parties at glitzy nightclubs featuring half the cast of Fair City.

But oh, how many of us laughed ourselves to sleep at the latest public mishap as tech companies basking in celebrity glow clumsily flounce in the emperor’s new robes.

Chat show queen Winfrey tweeted last night: “Gotta say love that SURFACE!’ Have bought 12 already for Christmas gifts. #FavoriteThings.”

Winfrey recently endorsed the Windows Surface calling it the “Mercedes-Benz” of tablets.

According to VentureBeat, a drill-down into the source of the tweet using Twitter client YoruFukurou revealed it came form Twitter for iPad.

The horror!
