Amazon releases iPad app to showcase entire store

Amazon.com has launched a complete rewrite of Amazon.com specifically for the iPad called Amazon Windowshop, which takes complete advantage of the iPad’s responsive, multitouch user interface.

According to Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, the app sets a new bar for e-commerce and will appeal to even the most traditional of Amazon customers.

On the back end, everything remains the same – 49 fulfilment centres with millions of in-stock items. But on the front end, customers will experience a new Amazon.com.

“Amazon Windowshop is a top-to-bottom rewrite of Amazon.com – designed and built without compromise just for iPad,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com.

“Try it. I think you’ll find it’s an amazing new way to shop Amazon’s millions of items. Same selection, same low prices, same fast delivery, same benefits of your Amazon Prime membership – just a completely new, fluid interface designed specifically for lean-back, touchscreen tablets.”

The smartphone is the leading mobile commerce device and the new class of tablet computers will also change the game, said Bezos, as the online retailer delivered second-quarter profits of US$207m in July.
