Doom’s John Romero teases new game in Connemara trailer

21 Apr 2016

What is John Romero up to? The game designer behind Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D has released a teaser video from the hills of Connemara that suggests a new game is heading our way soon.

John Romero is a name familiar to those gamers who grew up playing such legendary games as Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Quake and the cult classic Daikatana.

Now based in Galway with his partner Brenda Romero – with the pair founding the Irish gaming company Romero Games – John has been keeping his legion of fans on the edge of their keyboards since 2012 that a new game from him was incoming, and now it seems we’re about to find out.

A homage to Star Wars

Unexpectedly, Romero dropped a new teaser video filmed in the hills of Connemara – featuring a homage to the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens – that not only teased details of a new game, but also suggested he will be teaming up with his Doom and Quake co-creator, Adrian Carmack, who also makes an appearance in the video.

Being developed by Night Works Games – a “dark and violent subsidiary of Romero Games”, according to its website – little else is being revealed prior to the official announcement scheduled for 25 April.

Speaking at Inspirefest

So what is Romero about to release? Well, credible speculation appears to suggest the release of a game called Hoxar, which Shack News discovered, which features a mysterious website that cryptically talks about holographic technology and “predictive memory technology”.

Seemingly designed for curious gamers to sink their teeth into to find more details, its legitimacy would appear assured given that Romero himself tweeted about the find.

Sadly, the pair did not drop any hints when Siliconrepublic.com spoke to them recently as they talked about life in Galway and the Irish gaming scene.

The pair will be speaking about their experiences here in Ireland, the gaming industry and diversity within the tech industry at this year’s Inspirefest, along with a whole range of other interesting speakers.
