Students prepare for STEM Week by asking career questions

Fifth-year students from Wesley College in Dublin launch Smart Futures STEM Careers Week

Next week will see the launch of STEM Week to give second-level students who are making their final CAO choices more insight into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). In advance of the initiative, students are being given the opportunity to submit career questions to experts online and via Twitter.

STEM Week will run from 29 April until 3 May and it is being organised by Smart Futures, a national campaign for second-level students in Ireland that is co-ordinated by Discover Science and Engineering (DSE) through Science Foundation Ireland.

The aim of the week-long campaign is to help Leaving Cert students who are making final CAO choices, as well as Junior Cycle students making subject choices, learn more about STEM careers and opportunities.

In advance, students are being urged to submit career questions to those working in the areas of science, technology and engineering between now and 25 April. Students can either submit questions through the Smart Futures website or by using the hashtag #smartfutures on Twitter.

Career questions from students will be put to scientists who work in areas such as nutrition, sport and health, plus software developers, hardware designers and engineers.

Filmed responses from these industry experts will then air on the Smart Futures website from Monday, 29 April.

Experts who will be answering questions from students will include Dr Nora Khaldi, a mathematician who is CEO of the biotechnology company Nuritas, and Aaron Smyth, a support engineer at SAP.
