Twitter has acquired social data provider and longtime partner Gnip for an undisclosed sum to help the microblogging site provide “more sophisticated data sets and better data enrichments” for use by developers and businesses.
Gnip has been a Twitter partner for four years now. Gnip collects tweets from Twitter users, compiles them into data sets, and provides them to companies and organisations who use the data for several purposes, such as research or to tailor advertising.
Twitter revealed the acquisition in a blog post.
“We will continue making our data available to Gnip’s growing customer base. And with the help of Gnip’s Boulder-based team, we will be extending our data platform — through Gnip and our existing public APIs — even further,” wrote Jana Messerschmidt, VP, Global Business Development & Platform.
In its own blog post, Gnip CEO Chris Moody wrote that joining Twitter also provides the company with access to resources and infrastructure to scale to the next level and to offer new products and solutions.
