Yahoo! News has poached New York Times deputy editor Megan Liberman to be the portal’s editor-in-chief and lead its growth.

“She will lead a major expansion of Yahoo! News, bringing in new voices and defining features for the site,” Yahoo! said.

Liberman, who began her new job yesterday, will focus primarily on video, original reporting, live events coverage, and social news gathering, Yahoo! added.

Prior to working as deputy editor of The New York Times, Liberman held responsibility for all digital features and strategy as deputy editor of The New York Times Magazine. She also directed the magazine’s political coverage, supervised other Times magazines, and launched the Times’ parenting blog, Motherlode.

Yahoo! News’ previous editor in chief, Hillary Frey, left the job in March, after less than a year in the role.
