Siemens has annouced a big money contract with the Masdar project, which will see the engineering giant become involved in the construction of Masdar City – an Abu Dhabi-based development that could be the world’s first carbon-neutral city.
The deal will see Siemens implement an innovative power grid with advanced building technologies in the first phase of Masdar City – that will serve as an energy efficient power solution and a living research and development platform.
Carbon capture storage
As well as that, the agreement will cover its collaboration in the field of carbon capture and storage (CCS), which will entail research and development with the Masdar Institute.
“Masdar is a global pioneer in clean-tech initiatives. We are proud to be the strategic partner for this ground-breaking project,” said Peter Löscher, president and CEO of Siemens AG.
“It also highlights our strong relationship with Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates.”
Siemens will establish what it calls an “anchor presence” in Masdar City, housing its Mideast headquarters and a centre of excellence in building technologies.
The deal will further strengthen Masdar’s reputation as a green development and Siemen’s position as the a leading provider of environmental technologies – generating €23bn from green products and solutions.
Siemens has recently announced it intends to begin testing its own fleet of electric vehicles. Tests will take place with the vehicles and 100 employees this November.
