Meteor offers free text messaging

28 Nov 2002

Mobile network operator Meteor has fired the opening salvo in the annual Christmas battle of the mobile providers for the hearts (and pockets) of consumers by enabling pre-paid customers to enjoy free unlimited text messaging.

From this week, Meteor pre-paid customers will be able to send text messages to other 085 mobile users free of charge, with no limit on the number of text messages sent.

According to a Meteor statement, in order for Meteor users to qualify for free texting one month at a time, they would need to top up by €20. The combined offer includes free 085 to 085 voice calls every night from 10pm to 7am.

Meteor spokesman Andrew Kelly told siliconrepublic.com that it would be a lengthy promotion. “It will run from now until at least the end of February,” he said.

According to Kelly, Meteor now covers 84pc of the population and boasts the lowest 24×7 text rate to all networks at 9c per text.
