Google has become the first internet company to hit 1bn unique visitors on its websites in one month.

According to comScore, the search giant’s websites hit this landmark in May, with its greatest share of visitors seen from India (14.3pc) and South Africa (13.5pc.) Its lowest numbers were from South Korea (0.7pc) and China (0.8pc).

The number of unique visitors to Google’s sites rose by 8.4pc since last year from 931m.

These estimates are based on comScore’s global measurement panel of 2m internet users. It refines this with page view data that it receives from more than 90 web content publishers, though not from Google.

Microsoft came second, with 905m unique visitors last month, up 15pc, and Facebook came third, with 714m visitors, up 30pc since last year.

Facebook took the crown for most time spent on a site, which totalled to 250bn minutes, compared with 200bn on Google and 204bn on Microsoft websites.
