10 mathematical jokes that add up to a good start for Maths Week

10 Oct 2014

Maths Week Ireland, an all-Ireland celebration of maths, officially starts this weekend, so we’re celebrating with some numerical nonsense.

Over 50 universities, institutes of technology, colleges, museums, libraries, visitor centres and professional bodies have joined Maths Week in creating a positive image around mathematics and highlighting its applications in everyday life.

Maths Week Ireland aims to promote awareness, appreciation and understanding of maths and a variety of events and activities will be taking place during the week-long festival, which is expecting over 200,000 participants.

On Friday and Monday, Twiznight will host a maths quiz on Twitter which can be followed through the hashtags #mathsweek and #twiznight – and there’s a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 and a Google Chromecast up for grabs.

Other Maths Week highlights in Dublin include Maths in the City on Grafton Street and South King Street, the MathsFest teachers conference in University College Dublin on Saturday, Bubblz the Mathematical Clown in Dundalk Institute of Technology on Tuesday, maths comedian Matt Parker at the Science Gallery on Wednesday, and mathemagician Andrew Jeffrey in the Helix.

According to Maths Week Irleand co-ordinator Eoin Gill, many people find maths intimidating. In an effort to do away with this scary façade, we’d like to replace it with some cheerful chuckles with these clever mathematical quips.
