The Irish Government has appointed the former chairman of an Bord Pleanala John O’Connor as the new chairman of EirGrid, Ireland’s electricity transmission systems operator.

Pat Rabbitte, Ireland’s Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, said he is sure O’Connor will play an important role in guiding EirGrid in terms of the management and development of the energy network essential to economic and social development.

O’Connor has vast experience in public-sector leadership and management. He served as chairman of An Bord Pleanala for 11 years until his retirement in 2011. Previously, he held several senior-level positions in the Department of Environment, including finance officer, Principal Housing Policy Division; and as assistant secretary at the Water & Planning Division. O’Connor will be invited to attend before the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications before his appointment is formalised.
