Eco Wind Power and Energia host open day at Geevagh Windfarm to mark Global Wind Day.
The Geevagh Windfarm Open Day, held on Tuesday 15 June, included tours of the wind farms generators, hand painting of the turbines and presentations on the technology and impact of wind power. The event was attended by members of the public as well as students from local schools, including Ballyfarnon National School, Carraroe National School and Scoil Mhuire, Drumboylan National School.
Speaking at Geevagh Windfarm, Aidan Sweeney, chief operating officer, Eco Wind Power, said: “Wind power has become the most significant contributor to helping Ireland meet its renewable targets.”
400MW of wind-farm projects
The other sponsor of he event, Energia, which is a member of the Viridian Group, has 220MW of operational renewable electricity capacity contracted within its energy portfolio, with a further 400MW of wind farm projects currently in development across Ireland.
The company recently signed a preliminary off-take agreement to purchase the electricity generated from the pioneering Wave Energy Coverter being operated by US firm Ocean Energy Systems (OES) off Belmullet, Co Mayo.

In addition, the Irish Wind Energy Association [IWEA] is holding events to inform people about Ireland’s wind-energy potential over the coming days, including ElecTEC 10, which is taking place tomorrow in Dublin and will feature speaker presentations from companies such as 3M, EirGrid, Gaelectric, ESB International and entities operating in the wind-energy area such as the Energy Research Centre and the Charles Parsons Initiative.
