National College of Ireland (NCI) has appointed the academic and cloud-computing expert Dr Horacio González-Vélez to head up its new Cloud Competency Centre. González-Vélez has also worked in the ICT industry for companies such as Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems in the US and Mexico.
He is coming to NCI from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, where his research interests have covered parallel and distributed computing.
In his new role, NCI said González-Vélez will direct NCI’s cloud infrastructure, post-graduate programmes and research. The university said there were will be a specific emphasis on innovation, education inclusion and industrial partnerships.
As well as his career in academia, González-Vélez has spent more than 10 years in the ICT industry. For instance, he has worked for Silicon Graphics and Sun Microsystems in the US and in Mexico, where he hails from.
The Cloud Competency Centre is under construction and is set to launch in September.
