Apple has introduced a new category within its iOS and Mac App Stores called Editor’s Choice, which will help to no doubt drive downloads of innovative apps from various genres.
At time of writing, the top Editor’s Choice apps included Air Mail, Extreme Skater and The Thames: London’s Crown Jewel.
The move comes at a time when the mobile apps business – which Apple can take credit for kickstarting – is beginning to become a crowded place with Amazon, Google, RIM and Microsoft now in the fray.
The iOS App Store launched in July 2008 and as of February this year there were as many as 725,700 third-party apps available in the store. In January, the 10 billionth app was downloaded.
