Bing reveals rival to Foursquare and Facebook Places

18 Aug 2011

Microsoft’s Bing search engine has launched a new Windows Phone app called ‘We’re In’ that will compete with location apps like Foursquare and Facebook Places. The new location app will be coming to other device platforms like iOS and Android soon, Bing promises.

The new app ‘We’re In’ for Windows Phone will initially only be available in the US. According to Philomena Lobo, product manager, Bing Maps & Bing Mobile, users only need their phone numbers to sign up before inviting friends via their contacts and sharing location info with each other.

“As each of your friends joins you, their locations appear on the map. If you need to, you can pan, pinch and stretch the map to see more or fewer of them. Everyone that joins can see everyone else’s location.

“To stop sharing your location info at any time, just tap ‘leave’ on the People tab. If you want, you can send them a status message to let them know that you’re leaving.”

When the time is up, the invite expires and location sharing stops.

‘We’re In’ is available as a Windows Phone application.

“We’re working on bringing this app to more devices, so stay tuned!” Lobo said.
