PlayStation 3 sales reach 80m units worldwide

As the launch of PlayStation 4 approaches, Sony has revealed a milestone of 80m units of the seven-year-old platform have been sold worldwide since its launch.

New figures from Sony indicate that the PlayStation 3 platform continues to go from strength  to strength, with more than 300 software titles launching this quarter alone.

In total, the number of games created by third-party developers and publishers has reached 4,332 worldwide.

Latest games franchises, including Beyond: Two Souls, Grand Theft Auto V and Batman: Arkham Origins have launched new games especially for PS3 despite the expected arrival of a next-generation console.

When the PS3 system was first released in November 2006, Sony Computer Entertainment also launched PSNSM, an online multiplayer gaming and digital entertainment service, which now operates in 59 countries around the world with more than 150m cumulative registered accounts.
