Oscars 2013 inspire fresh crop of memes

25 Feb 2013

Last night’s Oscars ceremony honouring the best in filmmaking not only generated huge buzz across social media, but provided fodder for meme makers everywhere.

On Facebook, for example, ‘Oscars’ was mentioned three times more this year than last year, and the films nominated for Best Picture were mentioned 20 times more than 2012’s nominees.

The 85th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices the family dog Brian on the animated show, served as host.

MacFarlane is the subject of one Oscars-related meme (see below), which have been springing up since the nominees were announced in January.

We present the latest crop of Oscars memes, but first, a rundown of some of the major award winners to provide a little more context:

Best Picture: Argo

Best Director: Ang Lee (Life of Pi)

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)

Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained)

That’s right, Quvenzhané Wallis is the Oscars’ youngest-ever nominee at age nine. She had been nominated for the best actress prize for her role in Beasts of the Southern Wild.

And over here we have Oscar veteran Jack Nicholson:
