A survey commissioned by Púca shows that more than half of Irish respondents own a smartphone, with the iPhone as the most popular device.
The survey was conducted by market research company iReach, with 1,000 responses from Irish adults aged 18-65.
Twenty-eight per cent of those who own a smartphone have an iPhone. Fourteen per cent of respondents without a smartphone intend to buy an iPhone as their next handset.
Young people in particular were inclined to buy an iPhone, with 23pc of 18-29-year-olds without a smartphone planning to buy an iPhone.
However, 48pc of respondents without a smartphone plan to get a Nokia phone next, with 30pc of those aged 18-29 saying they wanted a Nokia device as their newest handset.
Twenty-three per cent of survey respondents with a smartphone own a Samsung device, 17pc own a Nokia phone and 12pc own a HTC phone.
Ninety-eight per cent of iPhone owners downloaded apps, compared to 77pc of other smartphone owners.
Six per cent of those surveyed owned an iPad.
“Apple continues to grab the lion’s share of media attention but Nokia continues to be popular and retain loyalty with a large portion of consumers,” said Púca’s CEO Eamon Hession.
“However, its popularity appears to be waning amongst 18-29-year-olds, as only 30pc of young people look to the Finnish brand for their next smartphone compared to 48pc of the figure of all adults,” he said.
