Zander in at Motorola

16 Dec 2003

The former president of Sun Microsystems Ed Zander is reported to be the next chairman and CEO of communications giant Motorola.

Zander will take over from Christopher Galvin whose grandfather founded Motorola. Zander will take over the reins of Motorola on 5 January next year.

Zander, who stepped down Sun last year, was up till now a partner at venture capital firm, Silver Lake Partners.

Motorola has been grappling with layoffs and shrinking margins in many of its business divisions. In October the company revealed plans to spin off its chip unit.

Galvin said in September that he would relinquish the position as soon as a suitable successor was found. The board of Motorola is understood to have voted unanimously for Zander’s appointment.
