There’s fantastic news for fans of the gut-wrenchingly, blood-splatteringly violent beat’ em’ up gaming series Mortal Kombat.
It’s been confirmed that Johnny Cage, whose first appearance came way back in the first Mortal Kombat (1992), will be a playable character in the forthcoming latest instalment in the series, Mortal Kombat X.
NetherRealm Studios’ senior producer Adam Urbano revealed the news to IGN. “You’ll get to play as Johnny Cage, but we’re also showing Cassie Cage, who is the daughter of Sonya (Blade) and Johnny,” he said.
A parody of martial arts actors such as Jean-Claude Van Damme, Cage has been a staple of the Mortal Kombat series for years and is known for his trademark cool-man shades and ‘leg split’ punch.
The new game picks up where the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot leaves off before moving 25 years into the future where MK veterans, new characters, and the next-generation kids of the older fighters will battle (hence Cage’s aforementioned daughter, Cassie).
In preparation for its release, a custom-made control pad has been designed specifically for the beat ’em up. Developed by Performance Designed Products (PDP), the hardware was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, and with its simplified six-button and directional pad system (which resembles an old Sega Megadrive controller), it’s bound to suit MKX’’s retro gameplay.
