Twitter on track to hit 200 million users by year’s end

1 Nov 2010

Real-time social networking company Twitter, which currently has 175 million users worldwide, is on track to reach 200 million users by the end of this year, based on its current rate of growth.

According to a report in the New York Times, Twitter has 175 million registered users – up from 503,000 three years ago and 58 million last year.

The company’s user base is growing at a rate of 370,000 new users a day.

At that rate, social network Facebook, which has 500 million users worldwide, may need to pay closer attention to the rear-view mirror.

The question now is which of the two social networking giants will achieve the magic 1-billion user figure and when.

Based on this current trajectory, Twitter will be adding users at a rate of 135 million a year and is now at a point where it could healthily compete with Google and Facebook for advertising.
